Directions for Making your own flags
I make and sell flags. Here are some directions and suggestions for finding materials:
I use clear thread ( .4 or .5) on all colors. I turn about 1/8" under on the width and leave salvage on the third side. Then sew the casing to put the pole through. For children's flags I sew 1/8" hem on all sides except pole casing.
My husband puts polyurethane on the poles and we use 1/2" candle cups as ends. If you don't the oil form your hands will make the pole look dirty very soon. I use 1/2" dowels. Hobby Lobby has the straightest 3' dowels and best price on quantities of candle cups. You can also get dowels and candle cups from Michaels.
For children I make the flags 12" X 24" and leave them a handle to hold on to. The only place to get 4' poles is ace hardware. We cut those in half for two 24" poles for the 12" wide flags. Then we put a stop on the middle of the pole to keep the flag up. For a three foot pole make the flag 34.5" X 44" and for a 24" pole make the flag 22.5" X 40"
Some people just put the dowel inside the casing and sew it up. 'the flag fabric wears out faster that way. You can use a 1/4" dowel this way or a 1/2".
Sizes See my order form for suggested sizes. I do not waste fabric. Sizes are apprximate. Wave it to see if it feels right. |
